WHY THESE SIX

Four on the Floor is the simplest possible driving beat. Kick on every quarter note. Disco invented it, house kept it, techno never let go. It works because it removes all rhythmic ambiguity — the downbeat is always there. Your body doesn't have to find it.

Boom Bap is space. The kick is early, the snare is late, and the gaps between are where the MC lives. Golden era hip-hop needed breath between the words. The pattern is the architecture of that breath.

Amen Break — six seconds of "Amen, Brother" by The Winstons, 1969. The most sampled drum break in history. Jungle, drum and bass, hardcore — all built on this one loop. The syncopation between snare and kick creates forward momentum no straight pattern can match.

Clave Son is the oldest idea here. Three hits, then two. Or two then three, depending on where you start counting. The spine of Afro-Cuban music. Every other instrument orbits the clave. It never plays alone.

Trap redefined the hi-hat. Not a timekeeper — a melodic instrument. Rolls, triplets, velocity ramps. The 808 became a frequency weapon. Atlanta changed everything by treating the drum machine as a synthesizer, not a metronome.

Gnawa Lila is trance through repetition. The qraqeb (iron castanets) and guembri (bass lute) lock into a pattern and hold it for hours. The repetition isn't monotony — it's a doorway. The rhythm stays the same. You change.
